Academics

Joining a sorority in college is a life-changing experience, but garnering an education is the top priority for Kappa. This is why each chapter is expected to maintain academic standards equal to or higher than their university’s or college’s all-sorority GPA. Additionally, each chapter establishes a GPA requirement for active members.

If a Kappa struggles academically, we help her through it. The Academic Excellence Team meets with her to craft an improvement plan using study tactics and time management. We want each sister to leave college with what they came for: a degree.

Joining a sorority can empower and change your college experience for better, but as women of Kappa Kappa Gamma we always put our academics first. Each chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma is expected to maintain academic standards equal to or higher than their university’s or college’s all-sorority GPA.

We understand adjusting to college can be a challenge, our Academic Excellence Committee is there to meet with any member who needs further support or help finding resources. We want to make sure each of our sisters are leaving college with both a well rounded experience and the most important thing, a degree.

History of Academics:

In the 1800s, it was nearly impossible for women to attend any type of higher education, and those who could were often ignored in the classroom. Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded in 1870 at Monmouth College as a coalition of women who bound together to fight the oppression they experienced in their collegiate lives. Kappa was founded on the basis of academic support and achievement in scholarly pursuits. The goal of the founders was to continuously prove that women were and are just as capable as anyone in academia. To this day, Kappa Kappa Gamma strives for academic excellence and enrichment of collegiate life.

Our Goals/Program:

Kappa Kappa Gamma understands that while academics are a crucial part of college life, a perfect GPA does not define the person behind it. For these and various other reasons, Kappa does not have a required minimum GPA in order to continue to participate our organization. During formal recruitment we do require a 3.0 GPA for students straight out of high school, and a 2.7 GPA for current college students. We support our members through study nights, Academic Programming, and Owl Buddies based on majors. We recognize our women for high achievement through recognition pearls for Dean's List, recognition keys for President's list, and through our Greek Honoraries at the University of Akron.
